About Vynatheya

ChathurmukhaBrahma’s Son Sage Kashyapa had two wives namely Kadru and Vinatha.

Once when Kadru and Vinatha were standing together, at a distance they saw a horse by the name Uchaishravas of Devaloka. Kadru asks Vinatha what’s the color of the horse? In turn Vinatha says it’s white. But Kadru says although body of the horse is white it’s tail is Black and challenges Vinatha if she is proved wrong Vinatha must become a slave to Kadru. Kadru was conning, she knew the horse is white hence she summons her children who were Serpents and asked them to get attached to the tail, since serpents were black in color and from a distance Vinatha saw a white horse with black tail and per agreement became slave of Kadru.

Vinatha preyed to her husband Kashyapa to grant her children as already Kadru had Serpents as her children, in turn with the blessings of the sage she becomes pregnant but could not deliver in time as the womb was growing which was causing difficulty to serve her master Kadru. She decides to open up the womb one day and finds three eggs in it. She preservers the eggs waiting for it to hatch, but to her surprise even after many days the eggs did not hatch, hence she breaks an egg and a flashing light comes out and joins the galaxy of stars. After some days she breaks another egg only to find a bright man developed only till the hips i.e. without legs. By seeing this Sun god makes him the charioteer for his chariot and he is Anoora or Aruna.

At this stage Sage Kashyapa orders Vinatha not to break the third egg and wait till it hatches completely. On Thai Amavasya day in Pushyamasa i.e. January month third egg breaks open and from this Garuda is born.As soon as he is born he demands food from Vinatha as he is hungry, but Vinatha says as it is I am a slave to Kadru and how can I feed you and explains to Garuda the reason of her being a slave. On hearing this Garuda goes to Kadru asks what should be done to get his mother relived of slavery. Kadru asks Garuda to get Amrutha from Devaloka and feed her children (Serpents) so that they can be immortal. Garuda rushes to Devaloka, asks for Amrutha but Indra refuses to part with this as Amrutha is meant only for the people who live in Devaloka. Garuda Fights with Indra and wins the battle, Lord Vishnu orders Indra to handover Amrutha to Garuda as he is asking for his mother’s release from slavery. Garuda hands over Amrutha to Kadru and Vinatha is relived of slavery.

Now to consume Amrutha the serpents start fight with each other, Garuda asks them to stop fighting and have Amrutha after taking bath and purifying themselves and places the Amrutha Kalasha on the bed of Grass, while the serpents were taking bath Deva’s come and carry the Amrutha Kalasha back to Devaloka. Serpents thinking that Amrutha is spilled over the grass starts licking and in turn the sharp edges of the grass split the tongue of the serpents. The grass on which Amrutha Kalasha was kept became sacred and is called “Dharbe” and the serpents were called two tongued creatures.

Lord Vishnu In appreciation of selfless and only to have his mother relieved off the slavery fought bravely with Indra and other Deva’s makes Garuda as his Vahana and Dwaja.

Garuda is also famous with 12 other names – Suparna, Vynatheya, Naagari, Nagabhushana, Jithanthaka, Jithamithra, Ajitha, Sarvathomukha, Garuthmaan, Khagheshwara, Thaksha, and Kaashyapanandana.

Garuda is also called as Pakshiraja, Vedaswaroopa as he brought veda to our land.

Vynatheya has adorned few serpents as his ornaments – Bangle to his left hand is Adishesha, Serpent Gulikais the bangle on his right wrist, Yagnopavitha is Vasuki, Udidara is Takshaka, Karkota became garland, Right ear ring is a serpent called Padma, where as Mahapadma became Left ear ring, on the head is Shankapala.

Rudra and Sukeerthi are Vynatheya’s consorts. Vynatheya is serving Lord Maha Vishnu in the form of a Dasa, Sakha, Vahana, Aasana, Dwaja, Fan (Beesanige) constantly, hence in Sri Vaishanavasampradaya Vynatheya is called “PERIYA THIRUVADI”.

Sri VedanthaDeshikar one of the Sri Vaishnava Kula Thilaka at the age of 20 receives Garuda Mantra and praise him, in turn Garuda grants him Hayagreeva Mantra, VedanthaDeshikar preys to Hayagreeva and gets his blessings, further becomes a great scholar and gives us 120 great Grantha’s and gets title as “KavitharthikaSimha”. Further Sri Vedanta Deshikar writes “Garuda Dandaka” on Garuda and also 50 slokas as Stotras which are called “Garuda Panchashat” in this one can find the Greatness, Vinayasampannathe, beauty etc., of Garuda.

Such a great Garuda along with Rudra and Sukeerthi is serving Lord Prasanna Channakeshava and Sowmyanayaki Thayar as Vynatheya in Bindiganavile, we are blessed to have the darshana of them and do kainkaryam.
